The Hunter And The Messenger

Have you ever noticed that there's sometimes similarities between the two characters? The characters that have plenty similar that you wonder if they started out as one character. Two characters that I believe are similar is the protagonist of I Am the messenger Ed Kennedy and one of the protagonists of The CW series Supernatural Dean Winchester. I know it sounds like these characters don’t sound like they are similar, but if you take a deeper look you might be surprised with what they have in common.

The stories of Ed and Dean start out fairly similar.  They have a little brother (Ed also had older sisters) and a relatively average life until one day changed their life forever. The day had both good and bad repercussions which included giving up their path of a mundane life.  While Ed's life changes by an Ace of Diamonds with three addresses on it, Dean's life changed when his mother was murdered by a demon. After the life-changing event, they start both helping people whom they didn't know beforehand. However, sometimes the help that was needed wasn't exactly peaceful. In at least one case for Dean Winchester and Ed, Kennedy had to kill a monster to make the world better. The monster that Ed killed was an abusive, alcoholic husband. For Dean, he has killed actual monsters and other mythological creatures.

They also other similarities within different parts of their life that are more detailed base than a sum up of their life so far. One of those differences is the fact that both characters have very low self-esteem. They feel like their failures. Sometimes they don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. A good chunk of this negative mindset is because one of their parents called them a failure his entire life. Ed was constantly tantalized by his mother while Dean was his now dead father who would verbally hurt him. But through these dark times, they've had one constant throughout their life. Though this constant might not be human, it has been with them for a majority of their life. For Ed, it was his coffee-drinking, the 15-year-old dog simply known as The Doorman.  The Doorman has been a part of Ed’s life since he was four years old and becomes his best and true friend.Dean's support didn't come from an animal, but a 1967 Chevy Impala. Like the Doorman for Ed,  the car had been in his life since he was a little boy. He always makes sure that his "Baby" is taken care of even before his father gave the car to him. Another part of their life that kept them going was their siblings. Over time, those siblings left and began a new life in different places. During these departures, both Dean and Ed's younger brothers went on to go to college far away from them. Nevertheless, there is one person that these two main characters love that is still with them. Though throughout the time that Ed and Dean knew these characters, they have never admitted their true feelings. Ed was secretly in love with fellow underage taxi driver Audrey. Dean's interest is an angel named Castiel. Though it is never truly confirmed on the show, it is hinted that there is something more to their relationship than meets the eye. Even though on the surface they seem so different, the similarities are hard not to notice when you look deeper.
